Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi
IndiaBrief The project was to design and build a hi-tech roof cover over the pool and executive dining lounge at the Rastrapati Bhavan. The principal brief given by the President’s Secretariat was to design and execute an elegant, light-weight cable suspended tensile fabric roof over a swimming pool that is 80 years old. “We were asked to provide a structure which could retain the heat of the pool during winter and allow good ventilation during summers. This part of the president’s residence boasts of a beautiful colonial building with a colonnade on three sides, opening to a large green lawn on the fourth side. After exploring various designs, the latest technology of suspended membrane roof structure was chosen. Keeping minimal load on the existing building, the structural supports were taken outside the main walls onto the 14 structural steel columns. To break the monotony, four eye shaped skylights with transparent sheet cover were introduced, giving it a rhythmic flow of see-through skylights increasing in size. Ventilators were added for good flow of air through the pool. The front side of the pool opened to a lawn area, which could be utilized for gatherings. The front screens were designed to give privacy to the people in the pool. Task Design - Engineering - Production - Execution - Installation House Nates, swimming pool cover
